Less than 6 weeks left to fish the streams! Remember the rules changed on 1st of May with bag limit of 1 fish over 50cms in all spawning streams.

We are well into Autumn now and we have been seeing a lot of new fish in the river, especially in the lower reaches. Good numbers of fish around, the streams have all picked up and have been fishing well over the last week. A few areas still tough though. Weather has been good with some cooler days and nights have put the fish on the chew. Thredbo river just received a little rain, however it is still clear and spotting is easy. Lower reaches up to the ski tube have been producing good fishing mainly using nymphs. We have been getting good reports from Indi and Swampy rivers as well. Browns are on the chew getting ready to spawn and some are showing signs of spawning already, so nymph/glow bug combination is working well. Some good fish caught on the Manic soft egg pattern in both Eucumbene and Thredbo Rivers, some good size fish in the lower reaches and delta areas.

Lake Jindabyne has been producing good browns from the bank using the Manic-Little Buggers, Fuzzle Buggers and Belinda’s Bitch flies. Some good fish caught on the eastern side of the lake when the wind is onshore, same flies. If the fish are being fussy you can try a small Hammils Killer. Lake Eucumbene has been dropping, however some fish have been caught using “other” methods. River is still low, some fish around the delta waiting to head upstream. Trolling flies has been picking up small rainbows, however best fishing is from the bank. Favorite spots have been Sid’s Bay, Kalkite when the wind is onshore and Hatchery bay, Creel bay on the western side.

2012 EVOLVE YOUR FISHING FLY ROD SHOOTOUT RESULTS

On Saturday January 21st, 2012 a group of passionate fly fishers came together at Lake Crackenback Resort in the Australian Snowy Mountains, just outside of Thredbo for a wonderful day of casting, tuition and fly rod comparison – also know as a shootout.

The EvolveYourFishing Team had overwhelming response to the event. A big thank you to all who attended including our interstate visitors who made the long trip up to the Snowies. A big thank you also to our master fly casters on the day – Peter Morse, Brian Henderson, Tony Loader, Craig Daly (Daf) and Murray Ogilvie. The event was made so much better with your input.

Lake polaroiding

For the fly fisher a floating line on a 6 or 7 weight rod will cover most of your fishing. If you are polaroiding or looking for rising fish a long leader is a must. Ambush is the best tactic in clear flat water as the fish are very spooky. Cast into a sandy patch and wait for a trout to approach before activating the fly. Rainbows tend to cruise the edges of the deeper water. Wear drab coloured clothing and keep low to avoid being spotted.

Lake techniques

Spring is when the fish have returned to the lake after spawning and are hungry. Yabby banks are always a good place to find fish and can be recognized by holes in the clay and remains of yabbies on nearby rocks where the water rats take them to eat. Fishing at night you can often hear them crunching away. The sandy beaches are another good area to look at as this is where Sandcased Caddis can be found. You will find these in the stomachs of most fish caught. If the conditions are right there can be very big Caddis hatches in the evenings.

This is the area above the Tumut Pond and is best accessed by the track that leads to Round Mountain hut. The hut itself is a good base for anyone wanting to stay overnight.
